Fits and Starts

“Two writers, one marriage. How do you handle it?” This is the question the protagonists of Laura Terruso’s film have to answer. And it’s no piece of cake, especially since Jennifer and David’s careers are at completely different levels. She’s a big star of the literary scene, busy adding yet another masterpiece to her oeuvre, while he is experiencing very little professional success. The opportunities he gets to meet the most important people in the literary world don’t do David any good: he’s treated more like his wife’s husband than an artist in his own right. He doesn’t feel at home at these gatherings; he considers this world insular and superficial. Against his better judgment, he lets himself be persuaded by Jennifer to go to her publisher’s house in Connecticut to present samples of their work, at a party designed as a kind of modern-day artist salon. He has no idea what he has actually agreed to. Fits and Starts is a hilarious satire of the world of publishing, full of situational humor and nicely-turned, witty dialogue. It should be mentioned that some well-known faces of American independent cinema are featured in Terruso’s supporting cast, including Alex Karpovsky and Onur Tukel.
