Canadian director Seth A. Smith has made one of the more interesting independent horror films of recent years, one that mirrors his twin fascinations with David Lynch and David Cronenberg. Fiction is mixed with reality, a psychedelic atmosphere with near-documentary observation. After her husband’s death, Beth (Danika Vandersteen) takes her two-year-old son Lowen (Woodrow Graves, son of the director and producer of the film), to the family seaside home to try and find some peace of mind. It’s not easy—losing her partner has left a deep, raw wound, and her responsibility as a single parent feels like more than she can handle. She looks to art for some kind of respite, but that just brings up more painful memories of her former life. To make matters worse, Lowen has issues of his own, and demands constant attention; he experiences trauma in his own way, and his behavior starts to become disturbing. Paradoxically, the idyllic setting doesn’t help either of them regain their balance, and the line between the real and the supernatural gets blurrier every day.
