Blue my mind

15-year-old Mia (played by Luna Wedler in a terrific performance) is in serious trouble. Not only has she moved to a new town where she has no friends at all—she also doesn’t get along with her parents. Luckily, she quickly befriends some rather mean party girls from her high school and starts hanging out with them. Her typical teenage attitude of “alcohol first, then drugs and boys” is deeply shaken when Mia starts her period. But this is only the beginning of the real drama: suddenly Mia eats her mother’s fish straight from the aquarium and her body undergoes a slow and terrifying metamorphosis. And the worst part is that she can’t really confide in anyone since she has no clue what’s going on herself.  Director Lisa Brühlmann turns a story about teenage rebellion and finding oneself into a disturbing take on awakening sexuality. Juxtaposing typical motifs of coming of age cinema, like first crushes, school and social dilemmas, with elements taken straight from a body horror movie, she creates a unique and highly symbolic story about the dangers resulting from identity transformation and adolescence itself.
