The Cakemaker

Thomas works at a charming little café in Berlin where he makes beautiful, elaborate cakes. Oran, a married Israeli man, visits the place whenever he’s in town for business. The two men quickly fall into an intimate relationship. But then suddenly, back in his home country, Oren dies in a car crash. Thomas decides that the only way to process his grief is to go to Jerusalem and find his lover’s family. Surprisingly, he gets a job at a café owned by noneother than Oren’s widow, Anat. At first the local community looks suspiciously at this strange, non-kosher German, but his tasty cakes and pies soon become a local sensation. Meanwhile Anat has no clue that there’s something much stronger connecting her with Thomas than their shared passion for baking cakes. In his feature debut, director Ofir Raul Graizer tells this story of difficult love with impressive wit and subtlety, carefully observing the fleeting and ever-changing emotions of his characters. Melodramatic narrative patterns are used here not only to create a love story, but also to show a passion for the art of creating cakes. Thomas’s great obsession gives him power and enables him to cope with horrifying events and his overwhelming sense of loss.
