Ana is pregnant, but there’s no man by her side. Her wealthy family can’t forgive her—they cast her out. She hires Clara, a nurse, to help her with the household chores and take care of the baby once he’s born. Gradually the women develop a close bond and their relationship turns into something much more than a professional arrangement. But Clara starts to realize that there’s something very wrong with Ana and her unborn child—her strange behavior becomes more and more frequent, especially on nights with a full moon. After the child is born, Clara steps up to her responsibilities and tries to protect the infant from the outside world and his inevitable fate. Marco Dutra and Juliana Rojas’ movie, presented and awarded at numerous film festivals around the world (Locarno IFF and Rio de Janeiro IFF, to name a few), is an atypical and particularly tender horror film. The directing duo tackles a variety of social and cultural issues in an unusual and innovative way, including motherhood and class divisions in modern-day Brazil. At the same time, paradoxically, they create a touching and sympathetic portrait of a working class woman, who in the name of loyalty and love is ready to make the greatest sacrifices.
