Alanis, the titular protagonist of Anahi Berneri’s film, works as a prostitute. Her situation is complicated: she has an infant to take care of and she’s crashing with her best friend Gisela. Constant harassment by the cops, financial struggles and procurement charges define the rhythm of her everyday reality. One day Gisela gets arrested and her apartment gets shut down by city officials. Alanis tries desperately to earn some money working at a second-hand store. She travels across Buenos Aires with a toddler in her arms to get to her aunt’s place. Having no choice, she also attempts to sell herself, but she comes up against the rules of the street. Alanis will have to fight for her dignity, to get a roof over her head, and above all for her son. Berneri avoids sentimentality and clichés in this moving story of a woman who gets let down by the system, the state and the rules of a new capitalist society. At the same time, Berneri’s movie stands up for the rights of sex workers, humanizing the main character through her profession, not in spite of it. Alanis, wonderfully played by Sofia Gala, becomes a true working class hero, although the world would much rather forget her struggles and sacrifices.
