Canadian director Kyle Rideout carries out a sharp and disarmingly funny vivisection of the phenomenon of homeschooling. Teenage Liam (Daniel Doheny) is a typical nerd, with practically no friends other than his over-protective and enthusiastic mother Claire (a sensational Judy Greer), who’s also his teacher, confidant and bestie. But one day, while taking his college exam, he meets pretty Anastasia. Liam intentionally changes his answers so he’ fail and have to repeat his final semester at a public school —and get to spend time with peers and his new crush. Claire, on the other hand, is none too happy about the prospect of a regular high school education. Rideout plays with the conventions of high school movies in a smart and funny way, putting Liam through a crash course in social hierarchies and relationships. Iconic characters like cheerleaders, jocks, quirky teachers and the dream girl are used here to tell the story of an unusual relationship between mother and son, queered by the process of home and public schooling.
