The directorial debut from Taylor Sheridan, an acclaimed screenwriter, takes place in winter on a remote Native American reservation. Cory (a superb Jeremy Renner) is a local game tracker with deep ties to the community who’s still haunted by demons of his past. He discovers the frozen body of a Native teenage girl in the snow. The investigation into the case is taken over by Jane, an FBI agent (an outstanding Elizabeth Olsen). Jane has to overcome the suspicions of the local community: the victim’s family doesn’t entirely trust her. With Cory’s help, but no assistance from the local authorities who don’t take this macabre case seriously, Jane starts her search for the truth with a degree of desperation, motivated partly by her sense of justice and partly by very personal reasons having to do with revenge. Sheridan’s thriller, suspenseful right up to the last minute, was the sensation of last year’s Un Certain Regard Competition in Cannes. Beautiful cinematography capturing a hostile, frozen landscape, a wonderful cast and a precise script come together for this unique tale of racial intolerance, systemic violence against women and Native Americans, and the need to avenge a crime.
