Love Me Not

In this film by Greek director Alexandros Avranas, nothing is what it seems. A narrative rich in symbolism gets underway when a well-to-do couple, living in a beautiful but strangely cold residence, decides to hire a young woman to be their surrogate. When the husband goes away on business, the young woman begins to fully enjoy her new, sumptuous lifestyle in the luxurious mansion. Meanwhile the wife grows more and more distant and withdrawn; after a couple of drinks, she takes off alone in the car. The next morning her husband is notified that an accident occurred and his wife’s body was left completely burnt. A neighbor gets involved in a series of mysterious events and his intentions seem to be less than honorable. Love Me Not offers a social and political commentary on the current situation in Greece, dressed up as a cinematic tale of crime, revenge and atonement. The director takes perverse pleasure in observing the illusion of a privileged, well-ordered life, and destroying the diabolical plans of his protagonists. He designs shifting relationships between his characters, playing with the viewer’s expectations, the conventions of the suspense thriller, and the power dynamics between oppressor and victim.
