Roman Polański, the great Polish director who created of classics like Rosemary’s Baby and Chinatown, is still in great creative form. In his new film, he returns to the issues he touched upon eight years ago in the much-publicized Ghost Writer, i.e. the thin line between realism and fiction and the power of imagination. Based on a novel by Delphine de Vigan, the film’s main character is Delphine, a celebrated Parisian writer who has had writer’s block since the success of her last book. When she meets a mysterious woman at one of her readings, her fairly stable life starts to go off the rails. A relationship develops between the two women, and what begins as a friendship soon turns into toxic addiction. Delphine starts to lose control over her life, and all the things she used to take for granted start to take on new meanings. Based on a True Story is an elaborate story of intrigue, spun by the steady hand of a legendary director and two stellar actresses: Emmanuelle Seigner and Eva Green.
