Night Comes On

Angela, an 18-year-old African-American girl (a sensational Dominique Fishback), gets released from a juvenile detention center after a couple of years, having served a sentence for possession of illegal weapons. She’s got no plan, no money and no determination—plus her cell phone is broken. She’s sure of only one thing: she wants to get revenge on her father for killing her mother. She visits her younger sister Abby, who lives with a foster family, and the witty and talkative child convinces Angela to go on a day trip, which turns out to be a kind of emotional internal journey and an attempt to reconcile with a painful past. The two young, working class, African-American women are forced to fight racism and its manifestations at every turn, forever changing their relationship as well as their take on the reality around them. White director Jordana Spiro co-wrote the script with Angelica Nwandu, a young black woman whose life story is very similar to Angela’s. The outcome of this collaboration is a moving, poetic film that shows that hope and love can exist even in the darkest of times and there’s always a chance to start over.
